Abuse: Violence within the home

Domestic violence occurs daily in homes throughout the world. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence reports that 1.3 million women are victims of domestic abuse each year. 85% of domestic abuse victims are women. Most cases of domestic violence are never reported to the police. There are approximately 16,800 homicides each year due to physical abuse. Rape associated with domestic violence occurs in about 40-45% of violent homes.
People who have been a victim of domestic violence are often stalked when he/she attempts to leave the situation. Obtaining a protective order helps in some cases, however, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1 in 12 women and 1 in 45 men have been stalked in their lifetime. Stalking laws have been enacted in many states to prevent further abuse. There are resources for victims of domestic violence. Call the domestic abuse hotline at 800-799-SAFE (7233). Contact the social services department in your area for further assistance.
